Scroll stopper

Any creative device that interrupts passive scrolling within the first second.

The long definition

A scroll stopper is a device that makes someone pause in a feed: an unusual movement, a striking contrast, a close-up, or a situation they immediately recognise. Its purpose is to win the first moment of attention, before the viewer decides whether to continue.

It is part of a hook, rather than the whole story. A surprising first frame can attract the wrong audience or disappoint if it has no connection to the product. Assess the continuation of viewing as well as the initial pause.

Anatomy: Scroll stopper

A useful interruption is easy to read and immediately connected to the subject.

A concrete example

Illustrative example · travel bag

“Everything on this table fits in this bag.”Start with an overhead shot of the objects, then pack them in the same shot.

The contrast between the pile and the bag invites a pause. The packing sequence gives that pause a relevant payoff.

Do

  • Keep the first frame legible.
  • Tie the surprise to the product.
  • Check the transition into the next shot.

Don't

  • Use unrelated shock imagery.
  • Overload the frame with text.
  • Treat a pause as proof of purchase intent.
