Edit text and captions

3 min readUpdated October 12, 2026

In short

Select a scene, open Text and edit its overlays and display interval. Timing is relative to the scene: review it after trimming and check the current preview. Text already embedded in the video file does not become an editable overlay.

Edit text

  1. In Video Editor, select the scene and then Text. Click Overlay text, edit the content and click outside the field.
  2. To add text, use the add button. To remove an overlay, clear its text and leave the field. Each scene accepts up to ten overlays of 300 characters.

First check that it is an editable overlay: it appears in the scene’s Text list. Text visible in the image but absent from that list may be embedded in the source media. Overlay text cannot directly erase or replace those pixels.

Set timing

In Overlay timing, enter a start and end, such as 0:00 – 0:02. Both positions are relative to the scene: start must be nonnegative, end must follow start and stay within its duration.

Click outside the field to apply the entry. An invalid range is rejected with a message requesting an interval within the scene. If you later shorten that scene, review its text: overlays starting after the new ending can be removed, and display endings are limited to its duration.

Example of timed text within a scene

Fictional example: a scene starts at the sixth second of the montage and lasts four seconds. For text shown during its first two seconds, enter 0:00 – 0:02 rather than 0:06 – 0:08. The text will then appear from the sixth to the eighth second in the complete video.

Use short messages when several pieces of information must follow one another. Give them distinct intervals rather than overlaying everything together. After saving and rendering again, watch at normal speed to check that text remains readable and matches the action shown.

Check the result

Wait for Auto-saved, then rebuild the preview and read at normal speed. These controls edit project overlays, not lettering already embedded in a source file. Automatic transcription and free positioning are outside this workflow.
