Keyword suggestions do not match my niche

3 min readUpdated October 12, 2026

In short

Start from the product type, its use and the context in which it appears to revise keywords. Remove overly general suggestions, then test terms gradually in Discover. Judge resulting videos by their content; a suggested keyword is not a market analysis.

Review the record

In My Products, open the product and first check its description and benefits. Ambiguous information can produce overly general suggestions. Correct the record before revising keywords.

Check that suggestions belong to the selected product rather than another catalog variant. For Shopify imports, some terms may come from store tags: they are suggestions for review, not certified niche analysis. An older commercial tag may therefore be unhelpful for video search.

Choose concrete phrases

  1. Keep phrases identifying your product and its use. Remove irrelevant or overly generic terms; add a specific phrase when needed.
  2. Save, then test a phrase in Discover using Keyword. Compare visible uses rather than just the result count.

Keep a small set of understandable terms you can test separately. Avoid context-free adjectives such as “amazing” or “premium” when looking for a product action. A phrase describing the problem solved or use situation gives a more concrete basis for comparison.

Example: correct an overly general search

Fictional example: for a mug, “trending gift” can return very different objects. First try “desk mug,” then a phrase matching a genuinely confirmed feature. Check whether the displayed product and context fit your offer before adding view or engagement thresholds.

If a specific phrase returns nothing, broaden its context slightly or try a synonym. If many cards appear but are irrelevant, specify the use. This distinction avoids adding keywords without understanding whether the issue is vocabulary or catalog coverage.

Refine gradually

If results remain too broad, add context such as the sport, room or action involved. Change one phrase at a time to understand its effect. A suggestion guarantees neither exhaustive niche coverage nor commercially relevant videos.
